Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as '100%' Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded recent reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the persistent rumours about his next move.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract running until 2029, with a potential extension option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth position in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's latest statement come after he described a recent 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable talk of a potential rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" remain at the club next season and urged supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, potentially available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The atmosphere during these press conferences has grown increasingly awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are fourth in the league, have qualified for the Carabao Cup last four, and can achieve a better European position with good performances in their final games.
The prevailing question is whether this off-field situation might begin to disrupt a team that was just starting to appear settled.
