Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key pass rusher Parsons to the Packers.
